Dodds Lincoln Cupit, Sr.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1943, and resided in Jackson until he enlisted in the U. S. Navy in May 1961. After serving 23 years, Dodds retired in 1984 to begin serving in the Civil Service Program for Morale, Welfare and Recreation and now has over 40 years of military and governmental service. An interest in art was developed at an early age but was put on a back burner due to career interests. In 1991, Dodds was selected as the MWR Director for the Naval Support Activity, New Orleans, Louisiana. There he was placed in charge of the Arts and Crafts Center along with many other programs. The Arts and Crafts Center's main program was Ceramics. Dodds started with the basic process and then tried the "Scripto" method of inscribing ceramics. Then he developed his own method of relief-carving flowers, animals and scenes onto ceramic pieces.
He has been awarded the "Freddy" for best Hobbyist entry and many Blue Ribbons from Ponchatoula and New Orleans, Louisiana in 1997 and 1998. In 2000, entering as a Professional, he received the "Best of Show" Award in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since then he has received three "Peggy's" for best Professional entry, two in Houston for 2001 and 2002; and one in Alexandria, Louisiana in 2003 along with a Best of Show award. In April 2003, during competitions in Dallas, Texas, he competed as a "Master" and was awarded five Blue Ribbons, "Best of Masters Division" award and the 2003 Show Award.
Dodds has had one showing. In January 2002, the Martin LaBorde Gallery on Royal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, featured his work.
Having completed 43 years of military and civil service, Dodds and his lovely wife, Virginia, of 42 years retired and now live in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They have three children and four grand children
